"We were in our house when soldiers started shooting at each other. Our house started burning. We ran away and started walking to Sudan. It took three days. We slept at night in the forest,” – Ngesti, 28 years old.
Did you know that women and girls make up more than half of the world’s forcibly displaced people?
Women like Ngesti are forced to flee their homes because of conflict. In a moment of chaos, many must make the snap decision to pick up their children and escape from violence.
Young girls, orphans, elderly, widowed journey through hardship to find some semblance of peace and safety.
And yet when they do find peace and safety – in a refugee camp or IDP settlement, the next phase of survival begins: How do to shelter themselves and their family? How do to adequately provide for their children? How to find some form of relief?
For International Women’s Day, we honour refugee and IDP women across Africa who have been forcibly displaced and have undergone harrowing journeys to find safety for themselves and their children.
And while UNHCR is committed to providing protection, assistance and support to these forcibly displaced women and girls, we need your support.
Will you join us this International Women’s Day and help rebuild the lives of our sisters who have forced to flee their home?
You can make a difference in empowering the lives of our forcibly displaced sisters.
Here is how your contribution helps support women and girls forced to flee their homes.
Please give generously.
