As temperatures plummet around the world, families who have been forced to flee struggling to survive in inadequate shelters, such as leaking tents to freezing caves and bombed-out buildings. 

The time to act is now. Protect, this winter, before lives are lost. 

Winter is always a challenging time, but this year, thousands of families from Afghanistan, Syria and Ukraine are returning to their homelands after being forced to flee, with nothing to protect them from the bitter winter weather. 

Make a donation today, and you can help people returning to bombed out and damaged homes. Your donation could help to replace windows and doors, repair leaking roofs and add insulation to keep out the cold, as well as enabling people to begin rebuilding their lives again. 

Elsewhere – in countries like Jordan, Lebanon and Moldova – where people are still spending winter far from home, your support could provide someone with the means to repair and weatherproof temporary shelters, or even find a new place to call home.

Additionally, your donations could help us to distribute warm winter clothes, thermal blankets, mattresses and heaters to make this winter bearable for people who have lost so much due to war and conflict. You could also provide access to health services for people forced to flee, as well as vital cash assistance, which gives families the ability to buy the things they need most to get through the long winter months, from fuel and electricity to food and medicine.

All money raised by UNHCR’s Winter Campaign will be used to directly fund our work supporting displaced people around the globe, including through our vital winter assistance programmes.
How does UNHCR spend my donation?

Your money helps UNHCR provide protection, shelter and other forms of assistance, and advocacy on behalf of displaced and stateless people every year

We ensure that as many funds as possible are redirected to refugees, stateless persons and asylum-seekers. 85 per cent of all funds raised go directly to field operations. 7 per cent is allocated for global programmes, helping refugees, internally displaced people, asylum seekers and stateless people under the UNHCR mandate around the world, and 8 per cent is for headquarters administration.

UNHCR staff work as closely as possible with and for people forced to flee, with 90 per cent of our workforce based in field locations. For further details on UNHCR's budget, read our global report.
