UNHCR AND WFP JOIN FORCES TO FIGHT FAMINE IN YEMEN

After seven years of devastating violence and conflict, families in Yemen are at risk of a terrible famine that could be the worst seen in decades. The war in Ukraine and extreme climate events are driving food shortages and massive price hikes across the globe.

In response to this ongoing crisis, we are joining forces with the World Food Programme (WFP), the lead UN agency fighting against global hunger, to raise vital funds to reach displaced people on the brink of famine.

To ensure that your generous donation to this joint appeal has the greatest impact on displaced families in Yemen, donations will be split between WFP and UNHCR. 70% of donations received through UNHCR’s platforms will fund our cash assistance activities in Yemen, which families can use to buy food and other essentials, while 30% will fund WFP’s food assistance activities in the country.

This joint appeal brings together UNHCR’s expertise in protecting families forced to flee, along with those of WFP. Combined with your support, we can get your donations to where they’ll be the most effective helping many more displaced people access life-saving food assistance.

Yemen is one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.

Economic instability, financial hardship and skyrocketing food prices have left over 17 million Yemeni people struggling to feed their children – let alone themselves. Millions already struggling with hunger are now only a step away from a deadly famine.

Time is running out for hungry children, women and men in Yemen. Please give now to help protect vulnerable families from hunger, before it’s too late.

Summary of donation information

How does UNHCR spend my donation?

Your money helps UNHCR provide protection, shelter and other forms of assistance, and advocacy on behalf of displaced and stateless people every year. We ensure that as many funds as possible are redirected to refugees, stateless persons and asylum-seekers. 85 per cent of all funds raised go directly to field operations. 7 per cent is allocated for global programmes, helping refugees, internally displaced people, asylum seekers and stateless people under the UNHCR mandate around the world, and 8 per cent is for headquarters administration. UNHCR staff work as closely as possible with and for people forced to flee, with 90 per cent of our workforce based in field locations. For further details on UNHCR's budget, read our Global Report.

About us:

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is a global organisation dedicated to saving lives, protecting rights and building a better future for people forced to flee their homes because of conflict and persecution.

We lead international action to protect refugees, forcibly displaced communities and stateless people.

We deliver life-saving assistance, help safeguard fundamental human rights, and develop solutions that ensure people have a safe place called home where they can build a better future. We also work to ensure that stateless people are granted a nationality.

We work in over 130 countries, using our expertise to protect and care for millions.
