Over 3 million people, like Lauretta and her baby, have been forced to run for their lives in Nigeria and the Lake Chad Basin.
In a region plagued by poverty, malnutrition and a lack of basic services, extremist group Boko Haram has been spreading terror in Nigeria and the neighbouring countries of Niger, Cameroon and Chad.
Most recently, more than 40,000 people have been forced to cross from northwest Nigeria into Niger as a result of an upsurge in brutal violent attacks on civilians. People have fled their homes and countries to escape sexual and gender-based violence, forced recruitment and suicide bombings.
Many of these people are women and children. Lauretta and her two-week-old baby crossed the border from Cameroon to Nigeria after armed men entered her village. But resources are scarce, and the situation is desperate. Only a quarter of the supplies needed are available, and people are subsisting on just one meal a day.

Your money helps UNHCR provide protection, shelter and other forms of assistance, and advocacy on behalf of displaced and stateless people every year. We ensure that as many funds as possible are redirected to refugees, stateless persons and asylum-seekers. 85 per cent of all funds raised go directly to field operations. 7 per cent is allocated for global programmes, helping refugees, internally displaced people, asylum seekers and stateless people under the UNHCR mandate around the world, and 8 per cent is for headquarters administration.
