People in Ethiopia are in crisis

Fearing for their lives and the lives of their families, thousands of children, women and men have been forced to flee. Most people travelled with nothing, and many are without adequate shelter. More than 5.5 million people are threatened by hunger. UNHCR is on the ground – and we are needed more than ever.

Please help us meet needs and save lives.

Our teams are rapidly working to address the critical situation of forcibly displaced families with shelter and core relief items:

HK$800       can provide 4 refugee families with solar lamps to help them adapt to the unfamiliar surroundings in the camps.

HK$1,600 can provide 2 refugee families each with a core relief item kit containing essential items.

HK$2,340    can provide multi-purpose cash to a displaced family to cover their basic needs for a month

HK$3,360    can provide toolkits to 10 newly arriving refugee families to construct their own shelters.

Your monthly support can help them during the hard time:

HK$180 monthly    can furnish 2 refugee families with three blankets to protect them from cold nights.

HK$270 monthly    can provide 2 refugees each with a core relief item kit.

HK$390 monthly   can provide multi-purpose cash to 2 displaced families to cover their basic needs for a month

HK$560 monthly can provide toolkits to 20 newly arriving refugee families to construct their own shelters.

We need your support to scale up our supplies and get ready to respond as the situation worsens.

How does UNHCR spend my donation?
Your money helps UNHCR provide protection, shelter and other forms of assistance, and advocacy on behalf of displaced and stateless people every year. We ensure that as many funds as possible are redirected to refugees, stateless persons and asylum-seekers. 85 per cent of all funds raised go directly to field operations. 7 per cent is allocated for global programmes, helping refugees, internally displaced people, asylum seekers and stateless people under the UNHCR mandate around the world, and 8 per cent is for headquarters administration. UNHCR staff work as closely as possible with and for people forced to flee, with 90 per cent of our workforce based in field locations. For further details on UNHCR's budget, read our Global Report.

About us:

UNHCR – The UN Refugee agency : The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) was established on December 14, 1950 by the United Nations General Assembly. The agency is mandated to lead and co-ordinate international action to protect refugees and resolve their problems worldwide. On the following year on July 28th, the United Nations Convention relating to the Status of Refugees, the legal foundation of helping refugees and the basic statute guiding UNHCR’s work, was adopted.

The primary purpose of UNHCR is to safeguard the rights and well-being of refugees. It strives to ensure that everyone can exercise the right to seek asylum and find safe refuge in another State, with the option to return home voluntarily, integrate locally or to resettle in a third country. The agency also has a mandate to help stateless people.

In an effort to protect refugees and to promote solutions to their problems, UNHCR seeks to reduce situations of forced displacement by encouraging states and other institutions to create conditions which are conducive to the protection of human rights and the peaceful resolution of disputes. UNHCR works in partnership with governments, regional organizations, international and non-governmental organizations to achieve these objectives.

For a one-time donation, it will support UNHCR work where refugees and internally displaced people are in need.

For a monthly donation, it will provide refugees with ongoing relief and protection and help them regain hope for a better future. Your monthly donation will also be used for any emergency preparedness and response activities, like supporting the forcibly displaced from Ukraine and any emergency globally that needs our urgent assistance.
