TÜRKIYE-SYRIA EARTHQUAKE donate.unhcr.org
A 7.8 magnitude quake struck near Gaziantep, close to the Türkiye-Syria border, early in the morning on 6 February. It was followed by a 7.5 magnitude aftershock. Dozens of tremors and aftershocks were felt in Türkiye and Syria as well as in other parts of Europe and the Middle East.
Severe damage to roads, telecommunications and other infrastructure is hindering search and rescue efforts in both countries.
Refugees and displaced people are among the most vulnerable in the aftermath of these quakes.
Even before this devastating earthquake, the people in the region were already in dire need of support. Gazantiep is an epicentre for humanitarian aid. More than 300,000 Syrian refugees live in the area. After nearly 12 years of war, displaced Syrians and their host communities are now facing another catastrophe.
“We at UNHCR stand in solidarity with the people of Türkiye and Syria affected by today’s devastating earthquake and are ready to help provide urgent relief to the survivors through our field teams wherever possible,”
said Filippo Grandi, UN High Commissioner for Refugees.
