Rohingya refugees have spent years in exile. Now they face another danger: the monsoon season.
Monsoon rains and severe winds have each year caused devastation across the Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh. In previous years thousands of shelters and hundreds of facilities, including health clinics, were destroyed or damaged by severe winds, flooding and landslides.
We have been working hard with refugees to train them as emergency responders, reinforce shelters, repair local infrastructure and improve basic services such as water, health and education facilities.
However, we urgently need more funds to ensure that these programmes can continue. Climate change is making this severe weather more and more common, and it is more important than ever to be prepared.
