Escalation in Deadly Attacks on Ukraine—Civilians in Urgent Need of Help

As the full-scale war in Ukraine is in its fourth year, displaced and war-affected people in Ukraine and refugees in neighbouring countries remain in critical need of support.

In recent days, Russia has launched one of its most deadly attacks on Kyiv and other cities. Civilians have been killed, including children, and more people are being forced to flee for safety. Damage to housing, hospitals, and schools is deepening the humanitarian crisis across Ukraine.

The people of Ukraine must not be forgotten and deserve our ongoing support. Please stand with them in this time of crisis. Your donation today can help save lives.

What is happening in Ukraine?

The Russian invasion of Ukraine has caused civilian casualties and the destruction of vital infrastructure, forcing people to flee their homes seeking safety, protection and assistance. Millions of refugees from Ukraine have crossed borders into neighbouring countries, in addition to those displaced inside the country. They are in urgent need of protection and support.

An estimated 17.6 million people in Ukraine require urgent humanitarian support, including more than 5 million people internally displaced by the war. As of February 2023, over 8 million refugees from Ukraine were recorded across Europe, of which 4.8 million were registered for Temporary Protection or similar national protection schemes.

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, has been working in Ukraine since 1994, alongside local authorities, NGO partners and community organizations to deliver protection and humanitarian assistance to people in need.

How does UNHCR help refugees from Ukraine?

With teams across Ukraine and in neighbouring countries hosting refugees from Ukraine, UNHCR is providing protection and humanitarian assistance, including emergency shelters, repairs for homes damaged by shelling, emergency cash assistance, and protection such as psychological support. Winter relief is also provided for displaced people in need as temperatures plummet, such as high thermal blankets.

What can I do to help refugees from Ukraine?

We have stockpiles of aid already inside Ukraine and more life-saving items being shipped to neighbouring countries as we speak. We urgently need cash donations to help fulfill these supplies and to provide cash assistance directly to refugees from Ukraine and those who are displaced within the country so they can purchase the essentials they need. Your gift will make a huge difference in the life of a refugee or an internally displaced person. Our teams are on the ground right now working with forcibly displaced people and providing them with life-saving aid, shelter and protection support. For company donations please write to [email protected]

What do refugees from Ukraine need?

UNHCR is urgently upscaling emergency operations across Ukraine and in neighbouring countries to support people forced to flee the current crisis. Urgent needs include shelter, relief items such as blankets, sleeping mats, jerry cans to carry clean water, and protection services especially for those most vulnerable, such as unaccompanied and separate children, women and older people, who are the vast majority of those fleeing their homes.
