Thousands of children are alone, afraid and vulnerable to exploitation.

Embarking on perilous journeys with no-one to protect them, they face many dangers, falling prey to wild animals, malnutrition and disease, violence, abuse and exploitation.

Sarah is 16 and her sister Mimi is only 18 months old. Forced from their home in South Sudan, they fled to Ethiopia a year ago.

She remembers the dangerous journey with her mother and siblings.
 

"It was terrible - we could only sleep in the bush. What we were eating was wild grass. We only depended on this. There was not enough water. We only depended on the water we collected from different puddles around there."

But tragedy struck the family again Sarah's mother and sister were killed When gathering firewood outside the camp Numb with shock, now Sarah is left to care for baby Mimi 5-year-old Henry And 3-year-old Rose.

Sarah is in Ethiopia now and in UNHCR’s care. Here she has access to child-safe shelter, food, clean water, medical care and the counsel of a child protection officer to help her cope with her grief and trauma. Best of all for Sarah, she has been able to return to school and feel like a child again. 

In the Nguenyyiel refugee camp, where Sarah lives, there are more than 1,600 families headed by children. They need your support. As their numbers grow to crisis levels, your help is urgently needed.
