Many families have reported having to cut back on food or skipping meals to make ends meet. We are witnessing a rise in negative coping mechanisms as parents are making tough choices between buying food or medicine for their children.

Across Afghanistan, Syria and the Middle East, displaced and vulnerable families are bracing for the onslaught of winter.

UNHCR is racing to assist as many families as possible before the worst of the weather sets in. Your gift to our Winter Survival Fund can help ease their suffering and prevent tragic loss of life.

After decades of conflict, Afghanistan is once again in a state of emergency. More than half a million Afghans have fled their homes this year, joining the 3 million people already internally displaced, and the 2.2 million living as refugees in neighbouring countries.

Winter poses a serious threat for these families, particularly for those living under plastic sheets in makeshift camps and public parks. The crisis is compounded by ongoing insecurity, poverty, acute food shortages and rising rates of COVID-19.

Every year since the Syrian war began a decade ago, UNHCR has undertaken a massive operation to help millions of vulnerable refugees and internally displaced Syrians endure the freezing northern winter.
