UNHCR | Winter far from home | Donate now

Thousands of people forced to flee will be spending this winter far from home, living in temporary shelters, with little resources, or the means to keep themselves warm.

You can help protect displaced families from the cold.

At UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, we are already ramping up our winter response, to protect people before the worst winter weather sets in.

In Afghanistan, and neighbouring countries including Pakistan, families have been subjected to decades of conflict, poverty, and hunger, as well as recurring natural disasters. To protect people from the region’s harsh winters, UNHCR is building shelters, providing heaters to keep people warm, and supporting families with cash assistance to help buy food, clothes, and fuel for heating.

Since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, millions of people have fled their homes, and face winters in temporary accommodation. In Ukraine, we are repairing war-torn buildings, distributing insulation kits, and helping families with emergency cash support. In neighbouring countries like Moldova, we’re helping refugees to integrate into communities, as well as helping them to find jobs to rebuild their lives.

Across the Middle East, families from Syria, are facing yet another winter far from home. UNHCR teams are on the ground in Syria, Jordan, and Lebanon, providing solar lights and heaters, repairing and insulating shelters, providing vital cash assistance and access to health services.

We can’t do this alone. Donate to UNHCR’s winter appeal today.

By making a donation you will be helping to protect the most vulnerable people from the cold this winter.

Protect displaced people spending winter far from home

Please consider making a regular donation to UNHCR. Refugees and displaced families rely on us all year-round for essential shelter, protection and support.

Regular donations help us to reach more vulnerable people, to plan for the most difficult months of the year – like winter – and to help refugees start rebuilding their lives by providing opportunities for work and education

Donations made directly to UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, may not be tax-deductible depending on the country you are in. National laws and regulations applicable to contributions to United Nations agencies vary from country to country. UNHCR partners with dedicated fundraising associations in a number of countries. In such countries, in order to make a tax-deductible donation through these entities, you will need to donate through their individual websites.
