Imagine being forced to flee your home and leave everything you know behind to finally feel safe. The journey will be difficult, and you have no idea what dangers you may face, but you must continue because you cannot go back.

This was the reality for Mariamme, who was forced to flee her home in the middle of the night with her family. After a three-day journey, walking 35 km through the forest, she finally found safety in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Now she is attending mixed martial arts classes organized by UNHCR to empower young people through sports.

Through sport UNHCR actively and meaningfully connects with young refugees. Our approach uses sport as a tool to protect children and young people from abuse, exploitation, neglect and violence while helping to develop their skills and ability to protect themselves. It is about tapping into the enormous potential of sport to help displaced communities in innovative ways, protecting them and improving their lives.

From sports clubs for refugee children in Rwanda to using sport to increase interaction between refugee children and their non-refugee peers in Iran; sports are an important part of UNHCR’s work to protect families forced to flee.
