A Humanitarian Crisis Demands Urgent Action: Help Returning Afghans
Tens of thousands of Afghans are being forced to return to their homeland from neighbouring countries, arriving in desperate conditions and facing an uncertain future. The sheer scale of these returns is creating a humanitarian crisis, and UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, urgently needs your support to provide life-saving assistance.
The Stark Reality for Returning Afghans:
-
Massive Displacement: From 1 to 30 April, over 282,000 Afghans returned, including some 107,600 by deportation.
-
Traumatic Journeys: Many arrive traumatized by raids, arrests, and detention in harsh conditions. They recount being separated from loved ones and stripped of their belongings.
-
Heightened Vulnerability: Afghan women and girls face increasing restrictions on their rights. Ethnic and religious minorities, human rights activists, and journalists are also at heightened risk upon return.
-
Strained Resources: Afghanistan's limited capacity to absorb such large numbers of returnees is exacerbating existing humanitarian needs, rising unemployment, and the impact of natural disasters.
UNHCR is on the Ground, But We Need Your Help:
UNHCR is working tirelessly with partners to provide critical support to those returning. But with current funding uncertainties, they urgently need financial supprt to respond effectively.
Your donation will directly help UNHCR provide:
-
Emergency Cash Assistance: To cover urgent needs like food, shelter, and travel for vulnerable returnees.
-
Access to Essential Services: Ensuring access to healthcare, clean water, and sanitation.
-
Livelihood and Reintegration Support: Helping families rebuild their lives and integrate back into their communities, with a focus on empowering women and girls.
-
Protection and Information: Strengthening reception centers to identify and address protection needs, provide crucial information, and gather feedback from returnees.
