Ebola outbreak in eastern DR Congo.

The outbreak is occurring in densely populated and highly fragile areas already affected by years of conflict, displacement and limited access to healthcare.

We need your help NOW

A deadly Ebola outbreak has been confirmed in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, with over 130 suspected deaths and hundreds of suspected cases. More than 2 million internally displaced people and returnees live in the Ituri and North Kivu provinces, where humanitarian needs are already severe and access to basic services remains severely constrained.

Many displaced people in the affected areas are living in incredibly sub-standard conditions, with overcrowding and lack of water and hygiene facilities dramatically increasing the risk of transmission. They are facing this outbreak with severely reduced access to medical care, disease surveillance, isolation capacity and referral systems at a time when rapid detection and response are critical.

UNHCR is working with authorities, local partners and refugee health volunteers to raise awareness of Ebola prevention and hygiene practices among people forced to flee and their host communities.
